[PAGE 1] A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE MAYOR AND ALDERMEN OF THE CITY OF SAVANNAH TO ADOPT THE 2033 DOWNTOWN SAVANNAH PLAN AND THE CONGRESS FOR THE NEW URBANISM EASTSIDE REDEVELOPMENT PLAN AND SOUTHSIDE RETROFIT LEGACY PROJECTS. WHEREAS, the Mayor and Aldermen recognize Savannah's history of planning beginning with the town plan established by General James Oglethorpe in 1733, which has flourished for centuries and continues to evolve making Savannah one of the most unique places in all of North America renowned for its beauty, simplicity and walkability; and WHEREAS, as we approach the 300th anniversary of the founding of Savannah and our town plan, the Mayor and Aldermen celebrate planning as the foundation for our community's successes as well as a critical component in future decision making; and WHEREAS, the Mayor and Aldermen recognize that the Savannah Development and Renewal Authority's 2033 Downtown Savannah Plan was developed through an open and participatory community process to guide and inspire Savannahians of all walks of life for the next generation, to re-invigorate Savannah's long history of exceptional city planning, and to leave a lasting legacy for future generations; and WHEREAS, the 2033 Downtown Savannah Plan's priorities include expanding downtown in a logical, connected fashion to the east and the west, injecting Savannah's signature, beautiful public space design into more neighborhoods, enhancing connectivity with active transportation, prioritizing quality of life over commuting time, and legalizing Savannah's historic building types; and WHEREAS, the Congress for the New Urbanism undertook two Legacy Projects-Eastside Redevelopment Plan and Southside Retrofit-as part of their annual conference held in Savannah in May 2018; and WHEREAS, the Eastside Redevelopment Plan focuses on the residential areas of the Eastside Neighborhood and Waters Avenue Corridor and provides a strategy to alleviate mounting developmental pressure while offering residents solutions to concerns like unsafe roadways, lack of community resources, and accessibility to housing; and WHEREAS, the Southside Retrofit concentrates on Savannah's Southside and provides concepts anticipating the growth of Georgia Southern' s Armstrong campus and the repurposing of vacant spaces on Savannah's Southside into an active town center that would provide local amenities and bridge the surrounding suburban neighborhoods. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Savannah that they hereby adopt the Savannah Development and Renewal Authority's 2033 Downtown Savannah Plan together with the Congress for the New Urbanism's Eastside Redevelopment Plan and Southside Retrofit Legacy Projects.
