RESOLUTION NO. ---
WHEREAS, 12 years since 32 people were killed at Virginia Tech, seven years since 26
students and teachers were gunned down at Sandy Hook Elementary School, three years since 49
people were murdered at an Orlando nightclub, two years since 58 people were killed during a concert
on the Las Vegas Strip, three months since 12 city employees were killed at the Virginia Beach
Municipal Center, and four weeks since 22 people were killed at an El Paso Walmart, we continue to
face the ongoing epidemic of mass shootings in our nation; and
WHEREAS, ongoing political inaction forces the Savannah City Council to confront the limited
ability of local governments to enact common-sense gun safety measures in our communities, including
in our own government buildings, libraries, recreation centers, parks, public festivals, and public spaces;
and
WHEREAS, we recognize that our inability to enact common-sense gun safety measures in our
community has a significant impact on our core responsibility to create a safe and resilient city for every
resident, worker and visitor in Savannah, Georgia.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Savannah, Georgia, urges the
Georgia General Assembly and the United States Congress to take action to address gun violence, and
echoes the call for "votes and laws," not just thoughts and prayers to address the emergency of gun
violence in our nation.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Savannah City Council urges the members of
Savannah's Legislative Delegation to support common-sense gun-safety legislation, including:
• universal background checks for all gun buyers;
• "red flag" or "extreme risk protective order" legislation to create a legal process for the
temporary removal of firearms from individuals deemed to pose an imminent risk of violence
to themselves or others;
• bans on assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, armor-piercing ammunition, and bump
stocks;
• legislation granting localities the authority to prohibit or restrict the possession, transportation
or carrying of firearms into public buildings, publicly approved events, or on other property
owned by a locality
• legislation granting local municipalities the authority to determine how to dispose of weapons
that are unclaimed or have no evidentiary value.
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that Savannah City Council urges the members of the Georgia
General Assembly to adopt rules and procedures and the opportunity to vote on all filed legislation,
and to consider each proposal on its own merits in an open, transparent process.
