The Community Assistance, Recovery, and Empowerment (CARE) Act creates a pathway for delivering mental health treatment and support services to eligible individuals with untreated schizophrenia spectrum or other psychotic disorders, or bipolar I disorder with psychotic features. The CARE Act allows the court to order the county to provide behavioral health treatment in community-based settings. The act has undergone updates, including the addition of bipolar I disorder with psychotic features as an eligible diagnosis, and has been implemented in Monterey County since December 1, 2024.
